Cheaped out

“Tradition” has been (or will be) broken. Actually, I am not sure how much of a tradition it is but I do know it is an annual occurrence that has taken place for at least as long as I have been with this organization. I am sure it started way before I became employed here.

The annual company/department picnic is today. Only it isn’t going to be a picnic today…

The picnic hasn’t really happened, of course, over the last several years because, ya know, covid. People freak out if you’re in too close proximity even when outdoors so it didn’t happen. But this year, the powers that be decided it was alright to have it again. As such, we will be headed to the park later this afternoon.

But, here’s the thing. It isn’t really going to be a picnic.

In the past, the managers have provided all the spread for a picnic lunch. Sandwiches, fruit, veggies, chips, drinks, etc. were all included with this time away from the office and official duties. People brought chairs and hung out in a relaxing atmostphere and got to know each other in a different setting.

This year, the managers have cheaped out. This year it isn’t a lunch so much as a snack time. Chips and cookies are the highlight of the menu this year. So, for most people, they will have to have a lunch of some kind before heading to the picnic.

Not sure why there has been a change from what was done in the past, but this is rather anticlimatic. Are we supposed to look forward to this? Doesn’t really seem like a celebration of another support year completed before moving into another school year support cycle. It almost seems more like an obligatory afterthought.

I guess I should just temper the complaint with the fact that I won’t have to be working during that time. But I would be much happier if they would feed me a regular lunch like in the past…

Hard choices

Today this blog is about hard choices. Really hard choices. The type of choices that might cause you to look back and think, “Dang, I totally made the wrong choice. I should have gone the other way.”

Today’s hard choice? Deciding what to have for lunch.

Choice #1 – a ham sandwich with bacon on a pretzel bagel

Choice #2 – leftover bbq’d chicken and homemade white bread.

I make hundreds, maybe even thousands, of decisions every day. Why is what to have for lunch such a difficult one?

I mean, they are both great options. Either one of them I could be happy with. But, there is always that nagging question in the back of the head saying, “You probably should have had the other one. It was probably a better choice.”

Ugh.

There here kind of decisions make or break a person’s day. Am I right? Make the wrong choice and things could go downhill quickly from here. Or make the right choice and everything after just seems to fall into place. There is potential for big success or massive failure. These are serious kinds of decisions…

Cravings

How do they work? Why do they work? Eh, forget that. I don’t really care. Well, mostly not really.

So, normally my cravings are the pretty standard fare – pizza, ice cream, chocolate chip cookies, popcorn, hamburgers, chips, etc. All stuff that is great when it is in your mouth, but not so much for your health. Ya’ll feel me here, right?

Anyway, I was at Costco the other day and I walked into the cooler area where they keep the veggies and fruits. It is a place that gets visited on a typical grocery trip to Costco so it wasn’t any new or special. I am familiar with the layout and what is typically in there.

But, I’ll tell ya what, for some reason the GIANT box of big green grapes caught my attention and I had to buy them. I had this sudden craving for grapes. The unusual part is that I don’t normally buy them. The box is too big. They don’t all get eaten before they go bad. I am not really even that especially fond of grapes. Sure they’re good, but they aren’t anything I would go out of the way for, say like I would for pizza or a burger.

I shelled out the money and brought them home.

I have eaten almost the entire box myself, over the course of just under a week. Say what???? I have never done that before! Why the sudden craving for grapes?
