Freedom requires responsibility

img_4855

Well, it was July 4th yesterday, as most of you are aware I am sure (at least my U.S. readers). That’s right, a celebration of our independence and freedom. However, the independence and freedom we were celebrating yesterday also comes with some responsibility.

I am generally not opposed to freedom, though I also am a believer that if you allow people to be stupid by choice, well, they’ll take advantage of it. I mean, most people have common sense but there are way more people out there that lack it and, quite frankly, probably run from it. That is a discussion for another day…

Anyway, we did something out of the ordinary and didn’t stay close to home. Instead, we went to a big city, with lots of people. I like to people watch and my general sense that people are dumb was confirmed, as usual.

In Washington, pot (weed, marijuana, ganja, whatever you wanna call it) is legal. Not only is it legal, but if you are 21 you can pretty much smoke it openly (though technically it is illegal in public, no one enforces it). As such, people use their freedom (or is it take advantage of their freedom?). Yesterday was no exception.

The sad part is that it was in the open, with lots of people (many of whom by the looks on their faces) who didn’t smoke, AND with children in close proximity. When I say children, I mean from infant to teens. Not just their own kids, but other families’ also. When I say close proximity, I mean within 2 feet all the way up to 30. Needless to say, there were lots of people getting the second-hand smoke and many were not pleased about it.

I am not on board with smoking, anything, but I recognize people will do what they want to do if allowed to. I am sure these people light up often in their own personal space, where it should be kept. BUT, if you have children or there are children around then you should refrain. PERIOD. If you choose to do it to your own body, fine. Secondary smoke is not acceptable, especially if the littlest are exposed and they have no say in the matter at all. Yes, I could have gotten up and moved. I get it. However, I am sure the children of these particular people are subjected to that second-hand smoke on a regular basis, especially since they so boldly and openly smoked right there with hundreds of others who were not smoking.

It makes me sad, really. Thoughtlessness prevails, again. Responsibility fails, again. Freedom isn’t always a good thing and stupid people prove it, again.

**Trigger warning: This post may cause rage. Best solution, common sense. If you have it, then the rage is probably appropriately place. If you don’t have it, then you are probably part of the problem.**

Keep it down!

Happy 4th of July. Happy Independence Day. Happy “we gave the Brits a middle finger” day. Whatever you call, it should be happy.

Let’s chat about this holiday for a second. Well, two things on this holiday. It is such a contradictory holiday in the US these days (and I am not even talking about the political stuff).

First, we, the people, are supposed to be free and have independence, right? Yet, on this holiday you can’t hardly “blow crap up” because everything is banned and illegal. That’s right, I live in one of THOSE communities that say, basically, “if it leaves the ground, it’s illegal.” WTH? Independence Day and I can’t celebrate the hell out of it by blowing crap up the way I want to??? How is that independence? No one really enjoys sparklers (unless you tape the together and make a big explosion out of them) and no one really likes those fountain things that spew bright colors. People want big booms, I cannot lie.

Second, can we keep it to just one day? For all the holy hell, can we keep the loud noises and disruption of sleep to just one day and night? It’s not Independence Week or Independence Month. It is a day! Let’s just do it for the dogs…it scares the heck outta them. It is hard to put the dog out into the yard so it can take care of business only to have random explosions and loud noises going of for a week before and after the holiday. I guess we probably should do it for the vets too (thought I never heard anyone from the Greatest Generation complain about the holiday before. But really, let’s just do it for the dogs. Well, and me because I am tired of finding the dog cowering behind the toilet in the bathroom.

Happy Independence Day!

THAT neighbor…

You guys, I have one of THOSE neighbors.

You know, that neighbor that seems to have no sense of time and makes noise at all hours of the day and night.

When he first moved in he got dogs. They bark at all hours of the day, all day long. Well, to be fair, just one of the dogs barks. The other one seems to be able to maintain control of his barking. I secretly think maybe the other dog gets annoyed at the barking like I do.

He put in a hot tub in the back yard. Great, I like hot tubs. But, he has friends over and then they laugh and talk and drink and smoke and seem to have no idea what time it is. So, late into the night there are people talking next door. Again, not a bad thing, but during the summer our windows are open and can hear everything, which means we are awake when he is awake.

Now, since it is summer and the days are longer, he thinks that he needs to use every daylight hour available to him. We live in the city, not on a farm, so there are more neighbors around than just me. Yet, this morning there was hammering, an air wrench, and a chainsaw…all before 6:30am. Again, our windows are open in the house, so we’re all up at the crack of dawn.

Dude, get a grip! Let’s have a little decency when it comes to noise pollution.

Abnormally large litter

img_4824.jpg

There are these companies in Seattle that put out these bikes so people can ride them whenever and wherever they want. Great concept, but execution sucks hardcore.

img_4823.jpgNow, when you are in and around Seattle, you see these stupid unattended bikes littering street corners, parks, lakes, alleys, rivers, etc. all over the city. I have even seen on the news that they are getting tossed off bridges and getting destroyed. Obviously there are others who don’t like them too.

Do people really ride these things? I haven’t seen anyone, have you? But I sure see them left everywhere. Yesterday, in a short four block walk, I saw about 70 bikes in various states of rest. I only captured four on camera because I could have spent an hour trying to take a picture of all of them. I just don’t see how this improves anything. We might as well buy a fleet of Tesla cars, charge them, and then leave them unlocked and pay-walled around the city. At least then they would be parked and not just left willy-nilly everywhere.

Like I said, concept may be good, but the execution leaves something to be desired. Are we so desperate for transportation in the city that we have to put up with abnormally large litter?

Friday night lamefest

TGIF! Right? Friday night, gonna hang out with the fam and have a blast…

Wrong.

Usually we have pizza on Friday night, but not this week. For some reason the culinary delight was Mac & cheese with some pepperoni in it. WTH?? Good lord, I should have just gone and gotten my own pizza.

Then, no one could decide what to do or what to watch. So, like any good family, everyone decided to go to their room and hangout by themselves with their own electronic device…boring…

I guess we qualify for the lamest family Friday fun ever. Sweet.

Conflicting co-worker help

Helpful co-workers?

Maybe not so much.

Having been the “new guy” for the last two years so I am still getting co-workers (who have been here a lot longer than me) giving me “advice” about how to do this and that. The problem is that the “advice” isn’t necessarily the same “advice” that was given by other co-workers. Now, I have had “advice” from multiple people about the same thing from different points of view and for varying ways to do the same thing. Only, the advice is THEIR way to do it and not actually what the SOP (Standard Operating  Procedure) says about how to do it.

So, I am just gonna do it my way because they all got it wrong and the SOP is mind-numbingly stupid because no one has rewritten it in years.

Cultural Appropriation

img_4819

So, there’s this thing where people get offended when other people appropriate (I guess that means “assume”) someone else’s culture. In most cases, I think it is a form of flattery rather than a form of insult. People tend to imitate that which they admire, but we don’t need to get into the psychology of it…

However, the outrage only seems to go so far as when it is someone they generally disagree with – in part or in totality. (Case in point – most people, and I mean liberals and conservatives alike watched his shows, thought Trump was fine and dandy as entertainment but make him the president and all the sudden the guy and his administration can’t breathe without being protested.) When the offender is “on your team” well, then it can be rationalized away as OK or justifiable.

Where is the outrage people? Why aren’t we seeing an uproar on this particular appropriation of culture? *I don’t think it is, but the point can prove useful I think.*

Welcome to Piss & Moan

Piss & Moan Home

Thanks for stopping in.

This sight was born out of the need to vent, Piss and Moan, about anything and everything. Mostly though, it is about stuff that pisses us off (and probably you too).

There are no real goals here. All we want is a place to complain and vent without doing it via the usual social media outlets, because that only seems to get us in trouble with people and we find that we really don’t like people.

So, what is Piss & Moan?

According to Wiktionary, we are this. Urban dictionary describes us as that. Merriam-Webster defines our existence too. Finally, the Online Slang Dictionary says this about us.

We’ll let you decide from here on out. Go ahead, stop in and be entertained, or not. We don’t care either way because we’ll Piss and Moan about that too.
